What it is about

Under what conditions?

Over the network and without logging in. This is the most dangerous combination: attackers can scan reachable devices automatically.

What can happen in the worst case

An attacker could use the vulnerability to

  • Sicherheitsvorkehrungen zu umgehen
  • sich als beliebiger TLS-Server auszugeben
  • wodurch er den Netzwerkverkehr ausspähen oder verändern kann

Am I affected?

Affected according to the BSI:

  • FreeBSD Project FreeBSD OS <15.1-STABLE
  • FreeBSD Project FreeBSD OS <15.1-RELEASE-p6
  • FreeBSD Project FreeBSD OS <14.5-STABLE
  • FreeBSD Project FreeBSD OS <14.5-RELEASE-p3
  • FreeBSD Project FreeBSD OS <14.4-RELEASE-p12
  • FreeBSD Project FreeBSD OS 15.1 <SA-26:73/caroot-15.patch
  • FreeBSD Project FreeBSD OS 14.5 <SA-26:73/caroot-14.5.patch
  • FreeBSD Project FreeBSD OS 14.4 <SA-26:73/caroot-14.4.patch

The installed version is usually shown under “Help → About” or in the device’s admin interface.

What helps?

Update to at least:

  • FreeBSD Project FreeBSD OS 15.1-STABLE
  • FreeBSD Project FreeBSD OS 15.1-RELEASE-p6
  • FreeBSD Project FreeBSD OS 14.5-STABLE
  • FreeBSD Project FreeBSD OS 14.5-RELEASE-p3
  • FreeBSD Project FreeBSD OS 14.4-RELEASE-p12
  • FreeBSD Project FreeBSD OS 15.1 SA-26:73/caroot-15.patch
  • FreeBSD Project FreeBSD OS 14.5 SA-26:73/caroot-14.5.patch
  • FreeBSD Project FreeBSD OS 14.4 SA-26:73/caroot-14.4.patch

Is the vulnerability already being exploited?

None of the CVEs is in the CISA catalogue of exploited vulnerabilities. That does not mean there are no attacks, only that none are documented.
